Short description

Sunshine Cleaning is a comedy-drama about two sisters in New Mexico who go into business together cleaning up crime scenes and other biohazardous messes. Rose Lorkowski was a cheerleader in high school and once seemed headed for bigger things, but she now works as a house cleaner and is raising her young son on her own. Her younger sister Norah is adrift, still living with their father Joe, an eccentric man who is always chasing schemes to get rich. When Rose needs money to send her son to private school, she learns that cleaning up after deaths is far more lucrative than ordinary housework, and she persuades Norah to join her in the new venture, which they call Sunshine Cleaning. The work brings the sisters closer together while forcing them to confront their differences and their past.

Christine Jeffs directed the film from a screenplay by Megan Holley, with Peter Saraf, Marc Turtletaub and Glenn Williamson producing. Amy Adams plays Rose and Emily Blunt plays Norah, with Alan Arkin as their father Joe, Steve Zahn as Mac, Clifton Collins Jr. as Winston and Eric Christian Olsen as Randy. Sunshine Cleaning was Jeffs's second feature, following her debut, and it was released in 2008.

Made for about 5 million dollars, the film took in roughly 16 million dollars worldwide, a solid return on its budget. On IMDb it holds a 6.8 rating from around 76,000 votes, while on TMDB it has a 6.6 from about 872 votes, indicating a generally favorable but not enthusiastic audience response. A critics' rating of 6.5 from 177 reviews puts it close to the audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The plot of the film is based on a radio report that aired on the news program of the major American radio company National Public Radio in 2001, which told the story of two women who opened a service in a Seattle suburb to remove and clean up hazardous organic contaminants. In the report, however, the women were simply good friends, not sisters as in the film.
