Jane is a struggling actress in Los Angeles who spends much of her time high. One morning, before an important audition, she eats her roommate's cupcakes without realizing they are laced with marijuana. What follows is a long, disorienting day across the city, as Jane tries to handle a series of errands and obligations while increasingly unable to keep track of what is real.
Gregg Araki directed the film from a screenplay by Dylan Haggerty, with Steve Golin, Henry Winterstern and Araki producing. It followed Araki's Mysterious Skin (2005) and preceded Kaboom (2010) in his filmography. Anna Faris plays Jane, heading a cast that includes John Krasinski, Adam Brody, Jane Lynch, Roscoe Lee Browne and Danny Masterson, among 32 credited performers.
Smiley Face runs 85 minutes and was released in 2007, a comedy co-produced by companies in Germany and the United States. It received a mixed response: on IMDb it holds a rating of 5.9 from roughly 21,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.1 from around 350 votes. A critics' rating of 5.6 from 39 reviews places it close to the audience scores, suggesting a film that drew comparable, moderate reactions from both groups.
