Son of Rambow
Short description
Will Proudfoot, a boy raised in a strict religious household where television and music are forbidden, meets Lee Carter, the school troublemaker, after being sent out of class. Lee is attempting to make his own action film, and he draws Will into the project. The two boys set out to recreate an action epic of their own, and their secret collaboration opens up a world of imagination for Will.
Garth Jennings wrote and directed the film, his second feature after The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy in 2005, working with producers Trevor Evans and Nick Goldsmith. Bill Milner plays Will and Will Poulter plays Lee, with Jessica Hynes as Will's mother, Jules Sitruk as Didier Revol, Neil Dudgeon as Joshua and Ed Westwick as Lawrence Carter. The story is set in 1980s England.
Son of Rambow was released in 2007 and runs 95 minutes. Made for a budget of 5 million USD, it took 11 million USD at the worldwide box office. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from around 34,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.7 out of 10 from roughly 500 votes. A critics' rating of 7.1 out of 10 from about 120 reviews places it close to the audience scores. Jennings went on to direct Sing, Madame, Sing 2 and further projects.
What's left behind the scenes
- On the bus taking the French exchange students away, a yellow and blue European Union license plate is visible in the background. The European Union did not exist in 1983.
- Sylvester Stallone was fully committed to the production of this film and the title “Son of Rambo,” however, he does not own the trademark, so a “w” was added to the end of the word.
- In the scene where Will is drawing in bed while humming, it was actually Garth Jennings who was humming. Initially, Bill Milner was humming himself, however, it turned out that he was humming a song by Kraftwerk during filming, and permission to use that composition could not be obtained.
- According to director Garth Jennings, the yellow sticker on Will's bicycle indicated that the item was a prop intended for filming. It was simply forgotten to be removed.
- One of Didier’s companions had to be given sunglasses because, according to the director, he was constantly looking directly into the camera.
- According to director Garth Jennings, in the scene at the beginning of the film where Will Poulter hums quietly, the actor's humming was redubbed and replaced with his own during final editing. This was done because Bill Milner was humming something by Kraftwerk, and the filmmakers did not have the rights to use that composition.
