Short description
Pain & Gain is a crime comedy set in 1990s Miami. Daniel Lugo, a personal trainer at the Sun Gym, wants the wealth he sees around him and decides that kidnapping will get it for him. He brings two other bodybuilders into the scheme: Adrian Doorbal and Paul Doyle, a former convict. Their target is Victor Kershaw, a wealthy businessman who becomes their captive. The plan goes wrong, and after Kershaw survives and goes to the authorities, they are slow to take his account seriously. He hires private investigator Ed DuBois to track down the men responsible. The film follows the gang's attempts to keep the scheme from falling apart.
Michael Bay directed the film, the tenth of the fifteen features he has directed, made between Transformers: Dark of the Moon and Transformers: Age of Extinction. Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely wrote the screenplay, and Bay produced with Ian Bryce and Donald De Line. Mark Wahlberg plays Lugo, with Dwayne Johnson as Doyle, Anthony Mackie as Doorbal, Tony Shalhoub as Kershaw, Ed Harris as DuBois, and Rob Corddry as John Mese. The film runs 130 minutes. Made for a modest 25 million dollars, it earned 87 million worldwide, a strong return on its budget. On IMDb it holds a 6.4 rating from around 241,000 votes, and on TMDB a 6.3 from roughly 4,900 votes, while critics gave it 5.4 from 199 reviews, placing it below its audiences.
What's left behind the scenes
- Michael Bay postponed work on this film several times, preferring "Transformers." He noted that he wanted to shoot a small film with a modest budget for a change.
- Albert Brooks was considered for the role in the film, but a contract was not signed, and John Turturro took his place. Ultimately, Turturro left the project due to scheduling conflicts, and the role went to Tony Shalhoub.
- With a budget of around $20 million, this film became Michael Bay's lowest-budget project since the release of his debut film, 'Bad Boys' (1995). Bay, Mark Wahlberg, and Dwayne Johnson had to take pay cuts to stay within budget.
- Specifically for his role as a bodybuilder in this film, Mark Wahlberg increased his weight to 96 kilograms.
