When in Rome

Beth Harper is a New York art curator whose love life has gone poorly, so when her younger sister decides on a whirlwind wedding in Rome, Beth flies to Italy for the celebration. At the reception she meets Nick, a reporter, but a misunderstanding leaves her discouraged. After a few drinks she wades into a fountain said to carry a love charm and takes several coins from the water. Because the legend holds that anyone who tossed a coin there will fall for whoever removes it, Beth returns home pursued by an odd group of admirers: a sausage vendor, a street magician, a painter and a male model. Nick, meanwhile, keeps turning up, and Beth must work out whether his interest is genuine or just more magic.

Mark Steven Johnson directed the film, his fourth feature after Simon Birch, Daredevil and Ghost Rider. David Diamond and David Weissman wrote the screenplay. Kristen Bell plays Beth and Josh Duhamel plays Nick, with Anjelica Huston, Danny DeVito, Will Arnett and Jon Heder among the supporting cast. The production, mounted by Touchstone Pictures with Italian and American partners, cost about 55 million dollars and took roughly 43 million worldwide. On IMDb and on TMDB, audience scores sit in the middle range on moderate vote counts.
