The Heat
Short description
Sarah Ashburn is a by-the-book FBI special agent whose record is matched only by her arrogance. Shannon Mullins is a Boston police officer with a foul mouth, a short fuse and a knack for getting results her own way. Neither has ever kept a partner or a friend. When the two are pushed into working together on the trail of a drug lord, their clashing methods and personalities make cooperation as difficult as the case itself, and the pair must find a way to function as a team.
Paul Feig directed the film from a screenplay by Katie Dippold. It arrived in 2013 as his third feature, following Unaccompanied Minors and Bridesmaids, and ahead of Spy, Ghostbusters and later comedies. Sandra Bullock plays Ashburn and Melissa McCarthy plays Mullins, with Demián Bichir, Marlon Wayans, Michael Rapaport and Jane Curtin among the supporting cast.
The production had a budget of 43 million USD and took around 230 million USD worldwide, a strong return on its cost. Audiences gave it a 6.6 rating on IMDb from 188,000 votes and the same 6.6 on TMDB from 4,274 votes, indicating a generally favourable but not enthusiastic response. Film critics were slightly cooler, averaging 6.2 from 183 reviews, so the gap between critics and audiences is narrow.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film's release was scheduled for April 5th, but was postponed by two months because the studio decided it would be better as a summer release.
- The sequel was announced before the film's premiere.
- In the interrogation room, Mullins complains about Ashburn's hair clip, after which Ashburn removes the clip and tucks her hair behind her right ear. In subsequent scenes, her hair constantly changes position.
- After Sandra performs a tracheotomy on a choking restaurant patron, blood splashes onto her shirt. In the next scene, when she is talking to the paramedics, the blood is gone.
- In the club bathroom, when Mullins partially disrobes her partner, a reflection in the mirror shows Ashburn's blouse being tucked into her skirt and then untucked.
- In the arrest scene where Mullins throws a watermelon at the suspect, the watermelon's location and degree of damage change between different shots.
- Initially, Melissa McCarthy was unable to film due to commitments to 'Identity Thief' (2013) and the TV series 'Mike & Molly' (2010). But the situation was later resolved.
- At the beginning of the film, Sandra Bullock's character, while channel surfing on television, stops on 'Dirty Mary Crazy Larry' (1978) and 'The Matrix Reloaded' (2003).
- In the bar where Mullins steals the file from Ashburn, a sign on the door reads: 'Happy Hour 3-6'. Happy hour is illegal in the state of Massachusetts.
