Short description

A group of travelers, including a monk, stay in a lonely inn in the mountains. The host confesses the monk his habit of serving poisoned soup to the guests, to rob their possessions and to bury them in the backyard. The story unfolds as the monk tries to save the guest's lives without violating the holy secrecy of the confession.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The story is based on real events from the 1830s that took place in the province of Ardèche. The owners of the 'Red Hotel,' former farmers Pierre and Marie Martin, were found guilty of robbing and murdering their guests. They were guillotined in the courtyard of their own hotel before a crowd of 30,000 onlookers.
  • This story also inspired Honoré de Balzac to write a novel of the same name, published in 1831. Balzac, however, significantly altered the real events to fit his own philosophical and artistic goals. His book was also adapted for the screen twice—in 1910 by Camille de Morlon and in 1923 by Jean Epstein.
  • The idea to remake the film Otan-Lara belonged to actor Christian Clavier, who loved the movie as a child. In 2005, Clavier wrote the screenplay and took it to producer Christian Fechner.
