Superstar

Mary Katherine Gallagher is an orphaned student at St. Monica High School, where she is out of step with her classmates and spends her time praying, daydreaming and talking with her one friend. What she wants most is a real, film-style kiss, and she becomes convinced that the only way to get one is to become a superstar. A school talent contest, whose winners stand to appear in a Hollywood production, gives her a route toward that goal.

The 1999 comedy was directed by Bruce McCulloch, the first of two features he made before Stealing Harvard in 2002, and written by Steve Koren. Molly Shannon plays Mary Katherine in a role she had developed on Saturday Night Live, with Will Ferrell as the boy she fixates on, alongside Elaine Hendrix, Harland Williams, Mark McKinney and Glynis Johns. About 49 cast members are credited.

Produced by Lorne Michaels for Paramount, SNL Studios and Broadway Pictures, the film cost roughly 34 million dollars and took about 31 million worldwide, falling short of its budget. It runs 82 minutes. On IMDb it holds 5.2 from around 22,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.3 from roughly 328. A critics' rating of 4.4 from 73 reviews places it below even those modest audience scores.
