Christmas in Wonderland
Short description
Christmas in Wonderland follows the Saunders family, who have just moved from Los Angeles to Edmonton and face a holiday season short on money, friends and festive spirit. With the mother delayed and unable to join them, the father takes his three children Christmas shopping at the vast West Edmonton Mall. There, twelve-year-old Brian and six-year-old Mary come across a bag stuffed with cash. Their find quickly draws the attention of crooks who want the money back, and the chase plays out amid the crowded mall.
The film was directed by James Orr, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Wanda Birdsong Shope and Jim Cruickshank. It is the third of the three features he directed, after Mr. Destiny in 1990 and Man of the House in 1995. Patrick Swayze plays the father, Wayne Saunders, with Matthew Knight and Amy Schlagel as the children, and Tim Curry, Carmen Electra and Chris Kattan in supporting roles. Produced in Canada by Insight Film Studios, Jordan Films and Redwood Palms Pictures, it runs 95 minutes.
Released in December 2007, the comedy drew weak responses. On IMDb it holds a rating of 4.7 from around 2,600 votes, and on TMDB it stands at 5.4 from a much smaller pool of voters. A film critics' rating of 2.3 from six reviews places it well below even those modest audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The city's residents and other supermarket visitors were unaware of the film's shooting, and many were greatly surprised to notice that the Christmas decorations and ornaments remained in place for many days after the holidays had ended.
- The film takes place in the West Edmonton Mall supermarket, where most of the filming also occurred from April 23 to June 8, 2007. It is the largest supermarket in all of North America and one of the largest in the world, covering an area of approximately 570,000 square meters, with its own water park, skating rink, cinema, golf course, and other entertainment areas.
- Leslie Nielsen was originally cast to play Police Inspector McLush, but he later withdrew from the project and was replaced by Tim Curry.
