Horns
Short description
Ignatius Perrish is suspected of killing his girlfriend, Merrin Williams, though no proof was ever brought against him. Ostracized by the people of his town and unable to move past her death, he wakes one morning after a night of heavy drinking to find horns growing from his temples. The horns come with a disturbing effect: people near him begin to speak their hidden thoughts aloud, exposing secrets they would normally keep. Using this new ability, Ig sets out to find who really killed Merrin.
The film is directed by Alexandre Aja, whose earlier work includes High Tension and Piranha 3D, and it sits fifth in the sequence of his features, between Piranha 3D and The 9th Life of Louis Drax. Daniel Radcliffe plays Ig, with Juno Temple as Merrin, Max Minghella, Joe Anderson, Kelli Garner and Heather Graham in supporting roles. Joe Hill, who wrote the novel the film draws on, shares screenplay credit with Keith Bunin.
Horns had a wide release and took in about 4 million USD worldwide, a modest return. On IMDb it holds 6.4/10 from roughly 92,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.3/10 from about 2,500 votes, while the film critics' rating stands lower at 5.4/10 from 122 reviews, so audiences have rated it somewhat more favourably than critics did.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film is based on the novel of the same name by Joe Hill (Stephen King's son).
- Shia LaBeouf was initially considered for the lead role, but Daniel Radcliffe was ultimately cast instead.
- Filming began in late September 2012 in British Columbia (Canada). It took place in Vancouver, Mission, and Squamish. Filming wrapped in December 2012.
- Ig's license plate number is 2036LUK, which is a reference to the Bible (Luke 20:36): "nor can they die anymore, for they are like angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection."
- The band accompanying Terry in the bar is a Vancouver (Canada) band called The Brass Action. The song they are playing is The Devil Down Below from their album «Making Waves» (2013).
- When Ig's brother, Terry, drives Merrin home from the diner, the car's license plate – GEN 138 – can be noticed, which is a reference to the Bible (Genesis 13:8): "And Abram said to Lot, 'Let there be no strife between you and me, and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen, for we are kinsmen.'"
- The scene where Heather Graham's character leaves the cafe, returning home, references her other, more famous role in "Twin Peaks," where the actress also played waitress Annie Blackburn, and the neon cafe sign reflected in a puddle is one of David Lynch's signature techniques.
