A Most Wanted Man
Short description
A Most Wanted Man follows Issa Karpov, a young man of Chechen and Russian background who enters Hamburg illegally and turns to the city's Islamic community for help. He carries a large sum of money connected to his late father, and his background, his faith and signs of torture make him the subject of suspicion. A German intelligence unit led by Günther Bachmann has him under close watch, while a British banker, Tommy Brue, and a young lawyer, Annabel Richter, become involved with him for their own reasons. As several countries' intelligence services take an interest, the question of who Karpov really is becomes entangled with the calculations of the people tracking him. The film is based on John le Carré's novel.
Anton Corbijn directed, working from a screenplay by Andrew Bovell. It was Corbijn's fourth feature, arriving between The American and Life. Philip Seymour Hoffman plays Bachmann, with Rachel McAdams as Richter, Willem Dafoe as Brue, Robin Wright as Martha Sullivan and Grigoriy Dobrygin as Karpov. Made for around 15 million dollars, it took roughly 36 million worldwide, a solid return for a thriller of its scale. Reception was favourable: critics rated it 7.3 out of 10, while audiences were somewhat cooler, at 6.7 on IMDb from about 85,000 votes and 6.5 on TMDB from a much smaller base.
What's left behind the scenes
- John le Carré’s novel, on which the film is based, is based on the real life of Murat Kurnaz, a Turkish citizen legally residing in Germany, who was arrested in Pakistan on suspicion of involvement in the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States. He was then sent to a US military base in Kandahar (Afghanistan), and then to Guantanamo Bay prison (Cuba), where he spent 5 years.
- Amy Adams, Carey Mulligan, and Jessica Chastain were considered for the role of Annabel Richter.
- Director Anton Corbijn appeared in a cameo role. He can be seen sitting next to Homayoun Ershadi (Abdullah) during the televised press conference.
