Short description
Russell and Rodney Baze are brothers scraping by in a Rust Belt steel town hit hard by deindustrialization. Russell works at the mill, while Rodney has returned from military service in Iraq and drifts toward easy money, gambling and underground fights that leave him in debt. After Russell goes to prison, Rodney is drawn deeper into the orbit of a violent crime ring in the Northeast, and when Rodney disappears, Russell sets out to find out what happened to him and to settle accounts.
Scott Cooper directed and co-wrote the film with Brad Ingelsby, following his debut Crazy Heart and preceding Black Mass in his filmography. Christian Bale plays Russell, with Casey Affleck as Rodney, alongside Zoe Saldaña, Woody Harrelson, Sam Shepard, Willem Dafoe and Forest Whitaker. Ridley Scott, Tony Scott and Leonardo DiCaprio are among the producers.
Released in 2013 and set in struggling industrial Pennsylvania, the film runs 116 minutes. Made for a reported 22 million dollars, it returned roughly 15 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.7 from about 123,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.6 from a much smaller tally, while critics' reviews average 5.9, placing the film modestly with both audiences and reviewers.

- Scott Cooper rewrote the script and the character of Russell specifically for Christian Bale, even though he hadn't met the actor at that point and didn't know if he would accept the role.
- Christian Bale actually learned to work with a furnace for his role and did not use a stunt double in the scenes at the metallurgical plant.
- Channing Tatum, Taylor Kitsch, Max Irons, and Garrett Hedlund auditioned for the role of the protagonist's brother. But ultimately, Casey Affleck was chosen.
- At the beginning of the film, politicians discussing the 2008 presidential election are shown on television in a bar. Later, Russell's vehicle inspection stickers can be seen with dates of 9/13 and 12/13, indicating he spent 5 years in prison.

- In 2011, Scott Cooper promised Christian Bale that filming would not begin without him. As a result of Bale’s busy schedule, filming didn't start until April 2012.
- The original script was titled 'The Low Dweller,' but when Scott Cooper rewrote it, he decided to change the title to 'Under a Black Sun.' The working title during filming was 'Dust to Dust.' Eventually, Terrence Malick and Sam Shepard convinced Cooper that 'Out of the Furnace' was the most suitable title for the film.
- Viggo Mortensen and Billy Bob Thornton were initially considered for the role that ultimately went to Woody Harrelson.
- The film being shown at the outdoor cinema is "Midnight Express" (2008).
- The international charity that helps fulfill the wishes of terminally ill children (Make-A-Wish Foundation) made a sick boy's dream come true. He and his family were able to meet Christian Bale and spend an entire day on the film set.
