Easy Virtue is a comedy set in the late 1920s. Larita, a glamorous and free-spirited American woman, meets John Whittaker, a young Englishman from a wealthy family, and the two marry quickly after a whirlwind romance. He brings her back to his family's country estate, where she soon clashes with her new in-laws. John's father regards his American daughter-in-law with curiosity and amusement, while his mother is appalled by her manners and outlook. The disapproval deepens into a tense struggle between the two women, and Larita must rely on her wit and poise to hold her ground.
Stephan Elliott directed the film and co-wrote the screenplay with Sheridan Jobbins. Released in 2008, it followed Eye of the Beholder (1999) in his filmography and came before A Few Best Men (2012). The cast includes Jessica Biel as Larita, Ben Barnes as John, Kristin Scott Thomas as Mrs. Whittaker and Colin Firth as Mr. Whittaker, with Kimberley Nixon and Katherine Parkinson in supporting roles. The production was a British-Canadian effort involving Endgame Entertainment, BBC Film, Ealing Studios and Fragile Films, and it took about 18 million dollars worldwide.
On IMDb, the film holds a rating of 6.6 out of 10 from roughly 23,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.5 out of 10 from around 466 votes. A critics' rating of 5.8 out of 10, drawn from 125 reviews, places it somewhat below those viewer scores.
