Short description
Shawn MacArthur arrives in New York City from a small town with almost nothing, getting by selling counterfeit goods on the street. His situation changes when Harvey Boarden, a hustler, notices that Shawn can handle himself in a fight. Harvey takes him on as a manager and brings him into an underground circuit of bare-knuckle bouts, where wealthy backers place bets on fighters treated as disposable. Shawn wins repeatedly, defeating professional boxers and martial artists, and quickly becomes a name in the scene. He soon comes to understand that the arrangement serves the people running it rather than him, and getting out will require him to take on his hardest fight yet.
Dito Montiel directed and co-wrote the film with Robert Munic, following his debut A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints. Channing Tatum plays Shawn, with Terrence Howard as Harvey, alongside Zulay Henao, Roger Guenveur Smith, Brian J. White and Angelic Zambrana. Kevin Misher produced.
Released in April 2009, the film runs 105 minutes and combines action and crime with drama and romance. It took in roughly 32 million dollars worldwide. On TMDB it holds a 6 out of 10 rating from 783 votes, while a film critics' rating stands at 4.9 out of 10 from 130 reviews, a lower figure than the audience score.
What's left behind the scenes
- The final scene of the film was shot over a week in very cold weather.
- The character of Zulay Henao was originally named Tasha in the script. The director was so impressed with the actress's audition that he ultimately named the character after her.
- Before filming began, Channing Tatum trained for five weeks with lead stuntman Mick Rogers and fight choreographer Mike Gunther. Former professional football player Brian White trained for a month, three hours a day, which allowed him to perform most of his own stunts.
- The penthouse on Wall Street used during filming belonged to one of Google's executives.
- The film takes place in four different areas of New York City: Queens, Flushing, Brighton Beach, and the vicinity of Wall Street. Each area has its own distinctive street fighting style and ethnic groups. To maximize authenticity and realism, the crew and actors regularly walked through them, noting various details and recruiting local residents as extras.
- In 2006, Dito Montiel's first film, "A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints," participated in and won an award at the Sundance Film Festival. Terrence Howard was then one of the jurors who awarded the director a special prize. Since then, the well-known actor has been open to participating in one of his future projects.
