Short description

Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb follows museum night guard Larry Daley, who discovers that the magic of the Tablet of Ahkmenrah is fading. The tablet is what brings the museum's exhibits to life each night, and as its power weakens, Larry's friends are at risk. He travels from New York to the British Museum in London, joined by figures including Theodore Roosevelt, the cowboy Jedediah, the Roman Octavius and the pharaoh Ahkmenrah, to find a way to restore the tablet's magic. Among the people he meets in London is Sir Lancelot.

Shawn Levy directed the film, the eleventh of the seventeen features he has directed to date, following This Is Where I Leave You and preceding Free Guy. Ben Stiller returns as Larry Daley, with Robin Williams as Theodore Roosevelt, Owen Wilson as Jedediah Smith, Steve Coogan as Octavius, Ricky Gervais as Dr. McPhee and Dan Stevens as Sir Lancelot. Thomas Lennon, Robert Ben Garant and David Guion wrote the screenplay, and Chris Columbus, Mark Radcliffe and Levy produced. The film runs 98 minutes.

Made for about 127 million dollars, it took roughly 363 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.2 out of 10 from around 148,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.2 out of 10 from over 6,300 votes; critics rated it 5 out of 10 across 112 reviews, lower than audiences.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is dedicated to the memory of Mickey Rooney (1920-2014) and Robin Williams (1951-2014), who starred in it but passed away before the film's release.
  • Spin-offs about the characters played by Owen Wilson and Steve Coogan were planned, but Robin Williams' death dashed those plans.
  • In the first part, when one element of the plate was moved, everything stopped coming to life, while in this one, the elements are constantly being moved, but everything still comes to life.
  • In the Asian Hall, when the tablet malfunctions again, Theodore Roosevelt quotes John F. Kennedy: “Ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country.”
