- The film's original title is 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi'. Director Ryan Johnson stated in an interview that he intended the word 'Jedi' to be singular. However, the film was released in Russian with the plural subtitle 'The Last Jedi'.
- In July 2015, it was announced that Benicio Del Toro would play the villain in the film. The actor later confirmed his involvement in the project. In "Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace," Del Toro was cast as Darth Maul, but refused to film when George Lucas cut almost all of the character's lines from the script.
- The computer model of Supreme Leader Snoke was reworked for this film after "The Force Awakens," as, unlike the previous installment, the character appears in the flesh, and director Rian Johnson felt that Andy Serkis' voice was too powerful for the frail old man Snoke appears to be as a hologram. Michael Fassbender, Steven Berkoff, and Ben Kingsley's character from "Sexy Beast" served as prototypes for the antagonist's new physical form. Interestingly, Michael Fassbender was offered an unknown role in the franchise during the casting of the seventh episode.
