What's left behind the scenes

  • Filming of some scenes with Mark Hamill and Daisy Ridley took place in September 2015 on the Skellig Michael rock island, approximately 15 kilometers west of the coast of County Kerry, Ireland. In 2014, the final scene of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" was also filmed there.
  • Joaquin Phoenix turned down the role that was played by Benicio del Toro.
  • Originally, it was planned that Ryan Johnson would direct "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." He ended up directing "Star Wars: Episode 8".
  • Rian Johnson was so impressed by Henry King's "Vertical Flight" (1949) and Mikhail Kalatozov's "The Unsent Letter" (1959) that he organized screenings of them for the actors before filming.
  • Production of the film began on February 15, 2016.
  • This is the last film featuring American actress Carrie Fisher, who died on December 27, 2016.
  • The film's title was published on the official Star Wars website on January 23, 2017.
  • Initially, in March 2015, it was announced that the world premiere of the eighth episode of "Star Wars" would take place on May 26, 2017. Later, in January 2016, it became known that Walt Disney Pictures had moved the film's release forward by seven months – to December 13, 2017, worldwide and December 14 in Russia. The date change was due to the great box office success of the previous film, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," which was also released in theaters in December.
  • The original title of the film is Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Director Rian Johnson stated in an interview that he intended the word "Jedi" to be in the singular. However, the film was released in Russian with the plural subtitle "The Last Jedi."
  • In July 2015, it was announced that Benicio Del Toro would play the villain in the film. The actor later confirmed his involvement in the project. In "Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace," Del Toro was cast as Darth Maul, but he declined to film when George Lucas cut almost all of the character's lines from the script.
  • The computer model of Supreme Leader Snoke was reworked for this film after "The Force Awakens," as, unlike the previous installment, the character appears in the flesh here, and director Rian Johnson felt that Andy Serkis's voice was too powerful for the frail old man Snoke appears to be as a hologram. Actors Michael Fassbender, Steven Berkoff, and Ben Kingsley's character from "Sexy Beast" served as prototypes for the antagonist's new physical form. Interestingly, Michael Fassbender was offered an unknown role in the franchise during the casting of the seventh episode.
