Dark Places

Libby Day survived the killing of her mother and sisters when she was a child, and her testimony helped convict her older brother Ben of the crime. Years later, now an adult, she is approached by a group of amateur investigators who believe Ben may have been wrongly blamed. Their questions push her to re-examine what she actually saw and remembered from that night, and to consider whether the story she has lived with for decades is complete.

Gilles Paquet-Brenner directed and wrote the screenplay, his fourth feature after Payoff, Walled In and Sarah's Key, and the film was produced in part by its star, Charlize Theron. Theron plays Libby, with Nicholas Hoult as Lyle Wirth, Chloë Grace Moretz as young Diondra Wertzner, Christina Hendricks as Patty Day, Tye Sheridan as young Ben Day and Corey Stoll as the adult Ben. The adaptation of Gillian Flynn's novel was made for about 20 million USD and returned roughly 5 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.2/10 from 50,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 5.9/10 from 1,391 votes; a critics' score of 4.7/10 from 80 reviews places it below both audience results.
