Tore is a young man drifting through Hamburg with a Christian punk group called the Jesus Freaks, who reject established religion while trying to live by Jesus's teaching of love. When he apparently restarts a stranger's stalled car, he takes it as a sign and befriends the driver, Benno, a family man who invites him to pitch a tent in his garden. Tore gradually becomes part of the household, which also includes Benno's girlfriend Astrid and her teenage daughter Sanny. What begins as a welcoming arrangement turns into something else, as Benno's cruel and sadistic side emerges and Tore's unconditional goodwill is pushed to its limit. The story is inspired by real events.
Katrin Gebbe wrote and directed the film, her debut feature, which was produced by Verena Gräfe-Höft for Junafilm with ZDF. Gebbe went on to direct Pelican Blood in 2020. Julius Feldmeier plays Tore, with Sascha Alexander Geršak as Benno, Gro Swantje Kohlhof as Sanny, Annika Kuhl as Astrid, Daniel Michel as Eule and Uwe Dag Berlin as Dieter.
The film was released in 2013 and runs 108 minutes, mixing crime, drama and horror. On IMDb it holds 6.8 out of 10 from around 2,600 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7.1 from a much smaller pool of 73. A critics' rating of 6.5 from 27 reviews places it slightly below the audience scores, suggesting a generally favourable but measured response.
