Coco is a French comedy about a self-made businessman who has risen from humble immigrant beginnings to considerable wealth. His latest ambition is to stage an extravagant Bar Mitzvah for his son Samuel, an event he presents as the celebration of the year and insists will be unlike anything seen before. Determined to impress on a grand scale, he throws himself into the preparations with growing excess, while his wife, his son, his mother and those close to him gradually distance themselves from him. The celebration becomes a reckoning with his role as a father.
The film was released in 2009 and runs 95 minutes. Gad Elmaleh directs and takes the lead role as Coco, working from a screenplay he wrote with Caroline Thivel; Alain Goldman produced, and StudioCanal, TF1 Films Production and Légende Films are the production companies behind it. The supporting cast includes Pascale Arbillot, Manu Payet, Jean Benguigui, Ary Abittan and Daniel Cohen.
Audience response has been modest: on TMDB the film holds a rating of 4.3 out of 10 based on 543 votes, which suggests a limited reception rather than a broad success.
