Chappie
Short description
In a near-future Johannesburg where an all-robot police force keeps crime in check, a police droid is stolen from its unit and reprogrammed by its creator. The experiment gives the machine something no other robot has: the ability to think and feel for itself. The droid, named Chappie, is raised by an unusual makeshift family while powerful interests, including people who see him as a threat to the established order, work against him. The film blends action and crime with science fiction.
Chappie was directed by Neill Blomkamp, his fourth feature after District 9 and Elysium, from a screenplay he wrote with Terri Tatchell. Sharlto Copley performs the title character, with Dev Patel as the engineer who gives him his new programming, Hugh Jackman as a rival figure within the robotics program, Sigourney Weaver as the company's head, and the musicians Ninja and Yo-Landi Visser appearing as themselves. It was produced by Simon Kinberg and Blomkamp.
Made for about 49 million USD, the film took roughly 104 million USD worldwide. Viewers rate it 6.8 out of 10 on IMDb across some 283,000 votes, and 6.8 out of 10 on TMDB, while the critics' rating of 4.9 out of 10 from 226 reviews places it well below those audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Filming began in late October 2013 in Johannesburg, the largest city in South Africa, and wrapped in February 2014.
- The film is based on Neill Blomkamp's short film "Tetra Vaal" (2004).
- At the end of the film, Chappie connects to the server 162.244.164.51 to create his mother. In reality, this is the address of the server of the hosting company SoftLayer Technologies, Inc. (IBM), which positions itself as the largest cloud network infrastructure in the world.
- The film depicts a hypothetical technology for uploading consciousness. However, an error is made: a helmet reading human brain neural activity would not be able to read Chappie's brain activity.
- The building used for filming Brandon Ore's character's lair is the house where director and screenwriter Neil Blomkamp lived as a child.
- “Chappie” was originally intended to be the first part of a trilogy, but the film flopped at the box office, and the idea of sequels was abandoned.
- Ninja and Yolandi Visser oversaw the construction of their house for the film, and they themselves painted the walls and developed original decorating ideas.
- The film featured the South African rap-rave group Die Antwoord, whose members are fans of Neill Blomkamp's work. Ninja even has a "D 9" tattoo on the inside of his lip in honor of his film "District 9" (2009).
- Neill Blomkamp was inspired to create the antenna in the form of a rabbit ear by Briareus – a character from Masamune Shirow’s manga “Appleseed,” which Blomkamp is a fan of.
- Neill Blomkamp and his wife Terri Tatchell wrote the screenplay in two weeks while Blomkamp was filming the science fiction action film "Elysium" (2013).
