Ben and Gail appear successful to the outside world, but bad investments and complacency have left them nearly bankrupt and emotionally distant. This financial strain leads the couple to fire Margarita, a Mexican woman who serves as a nanny for their teenage daughter. The dismissal triggers a sequence of events that ultimately results in Margarita's deportation from Canada.
