Short description
A massive hurricane hits Los Angeles, flooding the city and bringing thousands of man-eating sharks with it. As tornadoes form, the predators are lifted into the air, allowing them to attack residents across land and sea. Amidst the chaos, a surfer and bar owner named Fin teams up with his friends Baz and Nova to locate and save his daughter and estranged wife.
The film was directed by Anthony C. Ferrante, marking the second of 14 films in his career, following Headless Horseman and preceding Sharknado 2: The Second One. It was written by Thunder Levin and produced by David Michael Latt and Maximilian Elfeldt. The cast features Ian Ziering, Tara Reid, John Heard, Cassandra Scerbo, Jaason Simmons, and Alex Arleo.
Produced by The Asylum, Syfy, and Southward Films on a budget of 1 million USD, the movie was released on July 11, 2013. Audience reception on TMDB is low, with a rating of 3.9/10 based on 1,740 votes. In contrast, film critics gave it a higher rating of 6.4/10 based on 22 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- For filming Tara Reid's character's house, they used a regular house and, in some scenes, a mansion. As for the interior design, the sets were assembled inside a pool that could be flooded.
- Steve Guttenberg was offered the role of Fin Shepard, but he turned it down, a decision he later bitterly regretted when the film became immensely popular. Guttenberg even agreed to star in the television disaster movie "Lavalantula" (Mike Mendez, 2015) about fire-breathing tarantulas besieging Los Angeles.
- Ian Ziering confessed in one interview that he didn't like the film's script, but agreed to act in it solely for financial reasons. He was preparing to become a father for the second time, and he needed to earn a certain amount of money to qualify for the insurance benefits provided to members of the Screen Actors Guild.
- Almost the entire film was shot on sunny days. Bad weather had to be created using technical means and digital technologies.
- Around the 39th minute, Finn says the words "Semper paratus," or "Always ready." This phrase also serves as the motto of the United States Coast Guard.
- The beginning of the film was shot on a yacht at sea. After filming was completed, it turned out that some additional footage was needed, so they rented another, cheaper yacht. You can notice the difference in some shots – the first yacht was larger and had a mast.
- The role of Captain Corlos Santiago was written specifically for Israel Saez de Miguel.
- Filming took 18 days.
