Short description
James Bond receives a cryptic message tied to his past, which sends him on a personal mission stretching from Mexico City to Rome. There he encounters Lucia Sciarra, the widow of a notorious criminal, and gains access to a secret gathering where he learns of a shadowy organisation called Spectre. Back in London, M is under pressure from political figures who question the value of the secret service, while a new security chief seeks to reshape British intelligence. Going against orders, Bond draws on the help of Moneypenny and Q as he follows a trail towards Madeleine Swann, the daughter of an old adversary, who may hold answers about the people he is hunting.
Sam Mendes directed the film, the eighth of the fifteen features he has made in chronological order, arriving after Skyfall and before 1917. Daniel Craig leads the cast as Bond, with Christoph Waltz, Léa Seydoux, Ralph Fiennes, Monica Bellucci and Ben Whishaw among the principal players. John Logan, Robert Wade and Neal Purvis wrote the screenplay, and Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson produced. The production was large in scale, with a budget of 245 million US dollars and a worldwide box office of 881 million, and it credits 84 cast members and 261 crew.
Audience responses were moderate: the film holds a 6.8 out of 10 on IMDb from around 494,000 votes and a 6.6 out of 10 on TMDB from more than 11,000 votes. A film critics' rating of 6.4 out of 10 from 370 reviews places it slightly below the two audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- As Léa Seydoux later recounted, she had a little to drink before her audition for the role, forgot some of her lines, and generally failed the audition. She asked if she could try again the next day, she was allowed, and eventually landed the role of the Bond girl.
- Mexico does indeed have a Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos) festival, as depicted at the beginning of the film. On this day, all banks in the country are closed. However, parades like those shown in the film are not held in Mexico.
- Filming began on December 8, 2014, and lasted approximately seven months. The film crew worked in Rome, London, Morocco, Austria, and Mexico City.
- Bond drank Polish vodka Belvedere, which was released specifically for the film. One hundred unique 1.75-liter bottles were produced for the film, featuring the MI6 headquarters instead of Warsaw's Belvedere Palace.
- Chiwetel Ejiofor could have played the role of C.
- The film's title theme, "Writing's on the Wall" performed by Sam Smith, reached number one on the UK Singles Chart, which hadn't happened with a song from the James Bond franchise since 1965.
- James Bond's new car is the Aston Martin DB10.
- Gary Oldman was considered for the role that Christoph Waltz eventually got.
- During filming in the Moroccan desert, it was necessary to ensure that everyone within a radius of over 30 kilometers was aware that explosions would soon occur. The film crew had to visit all nearby tribes and settlements to notify everyone. During the preparation for and filming of the explosion scenes, local nomads provided security for the surrounding area and also served as guides.
- Ang Lee, Tom Hooper, David Yates, Danny Boyle, Shane Black, and Christopher Nolan were considered for the director's position before Sam Mendes agreed to return to the role.
- The British band Radiohead recorded a song specifically for the film, but the filmmakers ultimately rejected it as "too melancholic".
- The scene of the secret base explosion in Morocco was included in the "Guinness Book of World Records" as the largest staged explosion in the history of cinema.
