Ram, a wealthy young man raised in Australia, travels to India for his cousin's wedding and falls for Sona, a village girl from the Punjab countryside. Her elder brother Raghuveer opposes the match, while Ram's mother is equally unhappy about the relationship. Raghuveer sets Ram a condition: if Ram can work the family fields and outproduce him, he will be allowed to marry Sona. Ram accepts and spends a year living in the difficult conditions of rural Punjab to prove himself and try to overcome the obstacles standing between him and Sona.
The film was directed by Prabhu Deva, the fifth of the six titles he directed between 2009 and 2021, following Rowdy Rathore and released before Singh Is Bliing. Prabhu Deva also appears in the cast, alongside Shruti Haasan as Sona and Girish Kumar as Ram in his acting debut, with Sonu Sood, Randhir Kapoor, Poonam Dhillon and Vinod Khanna in supporting roles. The screenplay was written by Shiraz Ahmed, produced by Kumar Sadhuram Taurani under Tips Industries, and runs 148 minutes.
Made on a budget of about 5 million USD, the film was released in July 2013. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.9 out of 10 from around 5,500 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.3 out of 10 from a much smaller voter base, so the two figures reflect audiences who watched the film in very different numbers.
