George Simmons is a successful stand-up comedian and movie star who has spent years enjoying fame without much regard for the people around him. A medical diagnosis forces him to confront his own mortality, and he begins to take stock of the relationships he has neglected. During this period he meets Ira Wright, a young comic still working small clubs and struggling to find his footing. George brings Ira into his life as an assistant and something like a protégé, and the two develop a bond that changes how each of them sees his own situation.

Judd Apatow directed and wrote Funny People, which followed The 40 Year-Old Virgin from 2005 and Knocked Up from 2007 in his filmography. Adam Sandler plays George, with Seth Rogen as Ira.
