Mortdecai

Mortdecai is an adventure comedy about a British art dealer, Charlie Mortdecai, who is hired to help recover a stolen painting. Word around the art world holds that the canvas conceals a code tied to a long-buried fortune, and several other parties are chasing it as well, among them a suspected terrorist and a wealthy American collector. Charlie's wife Johanna, his servant Jock and an old friend from British intelligence, Inspector Alistair Martland, all become entangled in the search. The film is based on Kyril Bonfiglioli's novels about the character, with Eric Aronson writing the screenplay.

David Koepp directed, following Premium Rush in his filmography and preceding You Should Have Left. Johnny Depp plays Charlie, Gwyneth Paltrow plays Johanna, Ewan McGregor plays Martland and Paul Bettany plays Jock. Depp also produced alongside Gigi Pritzker and Andrew Lazar. The production, backed by Lionsgate, Infinitum Nihil, Mad Chance and Huayi Brothers Pictures, was a substantial one, with a budget reported in the tens of millions, but its worldwide takings fell short of that figure.

Audience reception was lukewarm: on IMDb it holds a rating of 5.5 from around 80,000 votes, and on TMDB it also sits at 5.5, from a much smaller pool of roughly 2,800. Critics were harsher still, giving it an average of 3.4 from 110 reviews.
