Short description
Left Behind follows Rayford Steele, an airline pilot whose routine flight to London is interrupted when passengers suddenly vanish from their seats, leaving only their belongings behind. The same disappearances happen across the world at the same moment, plunging cities below into panic and chaos. With airports shut down and debris from falling planes littering the runways, Rayford struggles to bring his aircraft and its frightened passengers safely to the ground. On the ground, his daughter Chloe and the journalist Buck Williams try to make sense of what has happened and why millions of people, including members of Rayford's own family, are gone. The survivors are left to work out what the event means and how to go on.
The film is a dramatization of biblical rapture theology, based on the Left Behind novels. It was directed by Vic Armstrong and written by Paul Lalonde and John Patus. It is Armstrong's second film as director, arriving two decades after Joshua Tree. Nicolas Cage plays Rayford, with Chad Michael Murray as Buck, Lea Thompson as Irene, Nicky Whelan as Hattie, Martin Klebba as Melvin Weir and Quinton Aaron as Simon; 27 cast members and 65 crew are credited.
Made for about 16 million dollars, it took roughly 27 million worldwide. Reception was weak: on IMDb it sits at 3.1 from 44,000 votes, on TMDB 4.3 from 1,432. A critics' rating of 2.4 from 71 reviews is far below even those audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film is based on a series of 16 books by Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins. The first book in the series, "Left Behind," was published in 1995.
- Filming of the movie began in August 2013 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
- On January 7, 2013, it was announced that Ashley Tisdale would play the role of Chloe Steele, but on August 8, 2013, she left the project due to scheduling conflicts. Work on the film was suspended from March to August. Producer Paul LaLonde stated that the filmmakers had waited until the last moment for Tisdale's schedule conflict to be resolved and for her to still be able to play the role. However, the problem was never resolved, and Cassie Thomson was cast instead.
- Originally, Tia Mowry was cast for the role of Shasta, but ultimately singer Jordyn Sparks took her place.
- In this film, Lea Thompson plays Irene Steele, the mother of Chloe Steele, played by Cassie Thomson. In the series “Switched at Birth” (2011), they played mother-in-law and daughter-in-law (Catherine Kennish and Nikki Papagus).
- A pre-screening of the rough cut of the film was held on January 31, 2014, specifically for the authors of the Left Behind book series, upon which the film was based. The authors enjoyed the film.
