LOL (Laughing Out Loud)

Lola is a teenage girl in Paris who is eager to move into adult life, with its independence and its romantic and sexual experiences. Her mother, Anne, keeps holding her back, and the two have grown unable to talk to each other. Returning to school after the summer, Lola finds little to laugh about: her boyfriend Arthur tells her he was unfaithful while they were apart, the group of friends around her grows more complicated, and her feelings for Arthur's best friend Maël confuse her further. Anne has her own troubles, including a secret involvement with her ex-husband. Known to her friends by the internet abbreviation for laughing out loud, Lola spends the film caught between the world she wants to enter and the mother who cannot let her.

Lisa Azuelos directed and co-wrote the film with Nans Delgado, and also produced it. It was her second feature, following Women in 1995, and it later led to an English-language version and, much further on, a sequel. Sophie Marceau plays Anne and Christa Théret plays Lola, with Jérémy Kapone, Marion Chabassol, Lou Lesage and Émile Bertherat among the supporting cast.

Made for about 11 million dollars, the film took roughly 32 million worldwide, a solid return. On IMDb it holds 6.3 out of 10 from around 10,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.5 out of 10 from about 1,355 votes.
