A police captain travels to meet his estranged daughter at the nightclub run by her boyfriend, only to find that the man has lured him there for another purpose. The club owner seizes the captain, his daughter and the other patrons, holding them to force the release of a long-imprisoned criminal. The officer must find a way to free the hostages and protect his daughter while facing an adversary who has prepared for him.
Jackie Chan plays Zhong Wen, the veteran policeman, and also produced; Liu Ye is Wu Jiang, the club owner behind the siege, with Jing Tian as Miao Miao, the daughter, and Yin Tao and Na Wei in supporting roles. Ding Sheng wrote and directed, his second film after Little Big Soldier and the one preceding Railroad Tigers in his filmography. The production, a Hong Kong and mainland Chinese co-release, had a budget of about 35 million US dollars and took roughly 91 million worldwide.
The film is a crime drama built around a standoff rather than the freewheeling action of the earlier Police Story entries. Audiences are divided: on IMDb it holds 5.9 from around 11,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.2 from roughly 435. A critics' rating of 3.7 from eight reviews sits well below both audience scores.
