Motherhood

Motherhood follows Eliza Welsh, a former novelist now living in Manhattan's West Village, where she raises two young children and writes a blog about the frustrations of city parenting. On the day of her daughter Clara's sixth birthday, she has to organize the party while juggling a long list of errands and obligations, including a magazine contest that requires her to write an essay about what being a mother means to her. Among the complications of the day are a film crew that has taken over her neighborhood, tensions with other mothers, and a husband who means well but is often distracted.

The film was directed by Katherine Dieckmann, who also wrote the screenplay, marking her second feature after Diggers in 2007 and preceding Strange Weather in 2016. Uma Thurman plays Eliza, with Minnie Driver as her friend Sheila and Anthony Edwards as her husband Avery; the child roles are played by David Schallipp and Matthew Schallipp as Lucas and Daisy Tahan as Clara. Rachel Cohen, Jana Edelbaum and Christine Vachon produced the film, which runs 90 minutes.

Made for a modest budget of 5 million dollars, the film received a critics' rating of 3.8 out of 10 from 51 reviews, while audiences gave it 4.6 out of 10 on IMDb and 5 out of 10 on TMDB, a pattern in which viewers rated it somewhat more favorably than critics did.
