Short description
Mallrats follows two friends, Brodie and T.S., who are dumped by their girlfriends on the same day. They retreat to a shopping mall to pass the time, and with help from the loiterers Jay and Silent Bob, they set out to win their exes back. Brodie's former girlfriend has already moved on, while T.S. faces the disapproval of his ex's father, who is organising an event at the mall. Kevin Smith wrote and directed the film, his second in chronological order, following Clerks and preceding Chasing Amy.
Jason Lee plays Brodie and Jeremy London plays T.S., with Shannen Doherty as Rene, Claire Forlani as Brandi, and Ben Affleck and Joey Lauren Adams among the supporting cast. The production involved 47 credited cast members and 73 credited crew, and was made for a budget of about 6 million dollars. It earned roughly 2 million dollars worldwide, a modest return relative to its cost.
On IMDb the film holds 7 out of 10 from around 134,000 votes, and on TMDB it has 6.8 out of 10 from a much smaller number of votes, showing a broadly favourable audience response. A critics' rating of 5.8 out of 10 from 48 reviews places it somewhat below those audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- It can be noticed that Stan Lee constantly looks to the left or right while talking to Brodie, as he was reading his lines from cue cards.
- Scott Mosier, the film's producer, drew blueprints of Jay and Silent Bob.
- The script initially did not include a role for Stan Lee. Kevin Smith wrote a fictional character named Stan Lee into the script.
- Initially, Kevin Smith wanted William Atherton to play Jared Svenning. The latter declined the offers due to the film's focus on a teenage audience.
- In the scene where Jay and Silent Bob hide in the bookstore, Bob is reading John Pierson’s book, “Spike, Mike, Slackers and Dykes: A Guided Tour Across a Decade of American Independent Cinema.” This book contains numerous articles by Kevin Smith.
- The film was shot in Minnesota.
- Sven-Ole Thorsen played La Farsa, a security guard at the shopping complex. A bounty hunter in “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” (1969) had the same name.
- Brody's comic book collection is actually Kevin Smith's comic book collection, which has significantly expanded since filming wrapped.
- Rene Mosier (Shannon Doherty) changes her outfits at least three times during a shopping trip. Shannon's contract included a special clause stating that she could keep all the items her character buys in the film. She also suggested that her character wear all the clothes she purchased at the mall.
- The character played by Ben Affleck is named Shannon Hamilton. Shannon Doherty was married to Ashley Hamilton.
- Although Rene's last name is never spoken during the film, it can be found in the end credits – Monsieur, which is a reference to the film's producer Scott Monsieur.
- Seth Green could have played Jay.
- When Rene (Shannon Doherty) tells Jay and Silent Bob that security has detained Brodie and T.S., Ethan Suplee (William) says, "Brenda?" – a reference to Shannon's character in the television series "Beverly Hills, 90210" (1990).
- The film was shot at the Eden Prairie Center mall.
- The original opening of the film was disliked by audiences during test screenings and was cut from the film. The unaltered version can be seen in the director's cut.
- Jennifer Love Hewitt, Jenny McCarthy, Reese Witherspoon, and Heather Graham auditioned for various roles in the film.
- The music playing during the scene where T.S. and Hamilton wait for the elevator also appears in "The Blues Brothers" (1980).
- Svenning was not originally intended to be bald, however Michael Rooker felt that the hairstyle suited his character best.
- John Landis was supposed to play a cameo role, but it was decided at the last moment to remove his character from the film.
- At 56 minutes, one of the characters at a flea market puts on a baseball cap with the inscription "Clerks" – a reference to Kevin Smith's first film.
- Brodie’s shirt features the combined faces of three actors who auditioned for the role but didn't get it.
- In reality, the elevator where Brodie and Rene have sex has glass doors.
- Alyssa Milano was considered for the role of Rene, but Shannon Doherty ultimately got the part.
- The names of the two main characters, Brodie Bruce and T.S. Quint, are a reference to "Jaws" (1975), which featured characters with the same names, and the film crew nicknamed the shark "Bruce".
- Studio executives demanded that the amount of profanity in the film be significantly reduced, or that "strong" language be replaced with more "mild" terms.
- “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back” was the second film in the so-called View Askewniverse. Other films include “Clerks” (1994), “Chasing Amy” (1997), “Dogma” (1999), “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back” (2001), and “Clerks 2” (2006). All these films are united by common characters, plot lines, events, and contain numerous allusions and references to each other.
- The pass hanging around Mr. Svenning's neck features the logo of the View Askew production company.
- Before Stan Lee agreed to play himself, the filmmakers offered the role to Quentin Tarantino and George Carlin.
- At the beginning of the film, during the opening credits, you can see that Ben Affleck's character is presented as a hero from the non-existent comic book "Buttman". 21 years later, Ben Affleck plays Batman in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice". Kevin Smith's character in a Batman costume also appears in one of the scenes of the film.
- The name Gwen Turner is a reference to director Genevieve Turner.
