The Captive centres on Matthew, whose young daughter Cassandra vanished while he briefly left her alone in the car. Suspicion fell on him from the outset, and eight years later the police are still questioning him about that day. His marriage to Tina has come apart under the strain, and leads have been scarce. Then troubling new evidence suggests Cassandra, now seventeen, may still be alive, drawing Matthew, the detectives working the case and the girl herself toward the mystery of what happened to her.
Atom Egoyan directed and co-wrote the film with David Fraser, and produced it with Simone Urdl and Jennifer Weiss. It sits between Devil's Knot and Remember in a run of features that includes Exotica, The Sweet Hereafter, Ararat, Where the Truth Lies and Chloe. Ryan Reynolds plays Matthew, with Mireille Enos as Tina, Rosario Dawson as the detective Nicole, Scott Speedman, Kevin Durand and Alexia Fast as Cass. The film runs 112 minutes and is a Canadian production.
Released in September 2014, the film drew modest audiences, taking about a million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 5.9 out of 10 from roughly 38,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.8 out of 10 from about 1,200 votes. A critics' rating of 4.2 out of 10 from 53 reviews places it below the audience scores.
