Short description
In early 1960s London, sixteen-year-old Jenny Mellor is a bright student preparing for Oxford, encouraged by her teacher Miss Stubbs and pushed by her father Jack. Her plans shift when she meets David Goldman, a charming man roughly twice her age who introduces her to concerts, dinners, clubs and trips abroad. The comfortable world he offers begins to compete with the academic future she has worked toward.
Lone Scherfig directed the film from a screenplay by Nick Hornby. It sits between her earlier feature The Birthday Trip and later films including One Day and The Riot Club. Carey Mulligan plays Jenny, with Peter Sarsgaard as David, Dominic Cooper and Rosamund Pike as his friends Danny and Helen, Olivia Williams as Miss Stubbs, and Alfred Molina as Jack. The 29-strong credited cast supports the period setting of a country moving from postwar restraint toward the changes of the sixties.
Made for about 8 million dollars, the film took roughly 26 million worldwide, a solid return for a British period drama. On IMDb it holds 7.2 from about 141,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.9 from around 1,464 votes. A critics' rating of 8.2 from 200 reviews places it clearly above both audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Orlando Bloom dropped out of the project a week before filming began and was replaced by Dominic Cooper.
- In the scene where David comes to Jenny to wish her a happy birthday, at the moment the door is opened, there is one book (given by her father) open on Jenny’s table, and the second (given by a friend) is still packaged. The instant David enters the room, both books are in a different place on the table and are unpackaged.
- The original title of the film is "An Education."
- Bibian Kidron could have directed the film, but pre-production of "The Sensual Education" stretched on for a year and a half. During that time, Kidron managed to sign on to film "Hippie Hippie Shake" and was forced to leave the project.
- At the 44th minute, in the scene where Jenny, David, Danny, and Hally arrive at a house for sale in Oxford by car, David and Danny are initially sitting in the front seats, and in the next shot – David and Jenny.
