Rock the Kasbah

Rock the Kasbah follows Richie Lanz, a music manager whose career has faded and who now handles performers far below his earlier ambitions. A booking takes him to Afghanistan with his latest client, Ronnie, but he soon finds himself stranded in Kabul with no singer, no money and no documents. When he hears a young Afghan woman sing, he decides to turn her into a star by entering her in a local television talent contest, despite the objections of her father and the wider pressures of the society around her. Bruce Willis, Kate Hudson and Danny McBride appear among the characters who become involved in his scheme.

Barry Levinson directed the film, the twenty-fourth of twenty-eight features in his filmography in release order, between The Humbling and The Wizard of Lies. Mitch Glazer wrote the screenplay, and Bill Murray leads the cast as Richie, with Zooey Deschanel, Bruce Willis, Kate Hudson, Taylor Kinney and Danny McBride also credited. The production, made in Morocco and the United States, had a budget of 15 million dollars and returned roughly 3 million dollars worldwide, a small fraction of its cost.
