Short description

James King is a wealthy hedge fund manager who is sentenced to prison for fraud. Terrified of the environment he is about to enter, James seeks help to prepare for incarceration during the month before he reports to San Quentin. He recruits Darnell, a man who washes his car, to harden him for the challenges of prison life. Through this unconventional training, the two men confront their mutual prejudices and realize they had misjudged one another.

Directed by Etan Cohen, this was the first of two films he directed, followed by Holmes & Watson in 2018. The comedy features Will Ferrell as James King and Kevin Hart as Darnell Lewis, with a supporting cast that includes Alison Brie, Craig T. Nelson, T.I., and Greg Germann. Produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, RatPac Entertainment, and Gary Sanchez Productions, the film was written by Ian Roberts, Etan Cohen, and Jay Martel.

The movie had a budget of 40 million USD and earned 112 million USD at the worldwide box office. On TMDB, it holds a rating of 6/10 based on 2,979 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Kevin Hart posted an announcement on social media offering free tickets to a 5:30 AM screening of the film at a cinema in Greenville, South Carolina. The actor received so many requests for tickets that he extended the promotion to two more screenings. Hart appeared in person at each showing to express his gratitude to the fans.
  • Both during interviews and when making press statements, Will Ferrell remained in character as James King.
  • Kevin Hart played a character named Darnell. "Darnell" is the actor's own middle name.
  • The film was shot in New Orleans, Louisiana—at a golf course, a mansion, a prison, and in the 9th Ward.
  • The Crenshaw Kings gang, led by the character played by the rapper known by the stage name T.I. (or T.I.P.), is based on the real-life Crenshaw Mafia—one of the most violent organized crime groups in Los Angeles (Crenshaw is a neighborhood in the city).
  • Will Ferrell was helped to get into the role of a prisoner by a man named Larry Jay Levine, a former inmate and founder of the company American Prison Consultants.
  • The authors of the comedy initially planned to obtain an R rating from the Motion Picture Association (individuals under 17 are admitted to the film only when accompanied by a parent or legal guardian).
  • During a prison riot, Will Ferrell's character stabs a cat poster with a shiv. This same poster appeared in the animated adventure film 'The LEGO Movie' (Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, 2014), which featured the voices of Will Ferrell and Alison Brie, both of whom are part of the cast of 'Step Brothers'.
