Vince Majestyk, a former US Army Ranger and Vietnam veteran, runs a watermelon farm in Colorado. He needs to bring in his crop to keep the farm solvent. When a small-time crook named Bobby Kopas tries to force him to hire unskilled workers, Majestyk fights him off and instead takes on experienced Mexican migrant laborers, among them Nancy Chavez. Kopas retaliates with a legal complaint that lands Majestyk in jail at the worst possible moment for his harvest. Drawn into a conflict with organized crime, Majestyk also finds himself the target of hitman Frank Renda, and the dispute escalates into a violent pursuit across the region.
The film was directed by Richard Fleischer, the seventeenth of twenty-three features in his directing career, following Soylent Green in 1973 and preceding Mandingo in 1975. Elmore Leonard wrote the screenplay, and Walter Mirisch produced. Charles Bronson plays the title role, with Al Lettieri as Renda, Linda Cristal as Nancy, Lee Purcell as Wiley, Paul Koslo as Kopas and Taylor Lacher as Gene Lundy.
Released in July 1974, the film runs 103 minutes. On IMDb it holds a 6.7 rating from around 11,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.8 from roughly 212 votes. The two are close, indicating a similar response from the larger and smaller voting groups.
