The Canal

David Williams works as a film archivist and lives with his wife Alice and their young son. When he begins to suspect Alice of being unfaithful, his unease is sharpened by a discovery at work: old footage from 1902 that links a violent crime to the very house he shares with his family. Convinced that a malevolent presence occupies the building, David finds his marriage and his grip on everyday life coming apart, and he is drawn toward a past that seems to be repeating itself.

The Canal is a British and Irish production directed by Ivan Kavanagh, who also wrote the screenplay; AnneMarie Naughton produced it. The film was Kavanagh's first feature before Never Grow Old in 2019 and Son in 2021. Rupert Evans leads as David, with Hannah Hoekstra as Alice, Antonia Campbell-Hughes as Claire, Steve Oram as McNamara, Kelly Byrne as Sophie and Serena Brabazon as the estate agent.

Running 93 minutes, the film was released in October 2014. On IMDb it holds 5.8 out of 10 from around 16,000 votes, and on TMDB it also sits at 5.8 out of 10, from roughly 469 votes. A critics' rating of 6.3 out of 10 from 23 reviews places reviewers slightly above the general audience scores.
