Summer Catch

Summer Catch is a romantic comedy set in the world of Cape Cod summer baseball, where college players from across the country gather each year hoping to impress professional scouts. Ryan Dunne, a local groundskeeper and pitcher, gets a place in the league and sees it as his chance to move up. His prospects are complicated by a rivalry with a teammate and by his growing relationship with Tenley Parrish, a wealthy young woman whose family summers in the area. Her parents disapprove, and the romance threatens to distract Ryan from the goal he has worked toward for years.

Michael Tollin directed the film, his first feature, followed by Radio in 2003 and Unraveling George in 2025. Kevin Falls and John Gatins wrote the screenplay, and Sam Weisman and Brian Robbins produced. Freddie Prinze Jr. plays Ryan opposite Jessica Biel as Tenley, with Fred Ward, Matthew Lillard, Brian Dennehy and Jason Gedrick among the credited cast of 29.

Released in August 2001, the film had a budget of 34 million USD and took about 20 million USD worldwide, a modest return. On IMDb it holds 5.1/10 from around 17,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.4/10 from roughly 227 votes. A critics' rating of 3.5/10 from 90 reviews places it below even the audience scores.
