The Salvation

The Salvation is a Western set in 1870s America, where Danish settler Jon Jensen has long awaited the arrival of his wife and ten-year-old son. When they finally reach him, they fall victim to a violent crime, and Jon kills the man responsible. That act of vengeance sets off a larger conflict: the dead man was the brother of Henry Delarue, a gang leader who terrorises the area around the town of Black Creek. Rather than stand behind Jon, the townspeople hand him over, and he is forced to confront Delarue on his own.

Kristian Levring directed and co-wrote the film with Anders Thomas Jensen. Mads Mikkelsen plays Jon, with Eva Green as Madelaine, Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Delarue, Mikael Persbrandt as Jon's brother Peter, Éric Cantona as Corsican and Douglas Henshall as Sheriff Mallick.

The film was released in 2014 and runs 92 minutes. It was a multinational production, shot with an 11 million dollar budget, and took about 1 million dollars worldwide, far less than it cost. On IMDb it holds 6.7 from roughly 46,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.5 from about 999 votes. A critics' rating of 6.5 from 82 reviews places it close to the audience scores, suggesting a fairly even reception rather than a sharply divided one.
