Hot Pursuit

Hot Pursuit is an action comedy about a by-the-book police officer, Rose Cooper, who finally gets the field assignment she has wanted. She is sent to collect Daniella Riva, the outspoken wife of a drug trafficker, and drive her across Texas to Dallas, where Daniella and her husband are expected to testify against a cartel boss. The plan collapses when armed men attack before the journey even begins, leaving Daniella widowed. Cooper takes it upon herself to complete the trip, and the two women find themselves fleeing both the killers chasing them and corrupt officers within the police force.

Anne Fletcher directed the film, the fifth feature in the sequence of her work that began with Step Up in 2006 and continued through 27 Dresses, The Proposal and The Guilt Trip before this release, with Dumplin' and Hocus Pocus 2 following later. Reese Witherspoon, who also produced, plays Cooper opposite Sofía Vergara as Daniella; John Carroll Lynch, Robert Kazinsky, Richard T. Jones and Michael Mosley appear in supporting roles. The screenplay is by John Quaintance and David Feeney.

Made for 35 million dollars, the film took in about 52 million worldwide, a modest return. Audiences were unenthusiastic, with an IMDb rating of 5.2 from roughly 58,000 votes and a TMDB rating of 5.7 from far fewer. Critics were harsher still, giving it 3.2 out of 10 across 171 reviews, well below the audience scores.
