Short description

Brad Whitaker, a mild-mannered radio executive, marries Sara and works hard at winning over her two children, Megan and Dylan. His efforts start to pay off until Dusty, the kids' free-spirited biological father, reappears, and the two men begin competing for the children's attention while Sara watches her household turn into a contest between two very different personalities.

Sean Anders directed the comedy, his fourth feature after Sex Drive, That's My Boy and Horrible Bosses 2, and he went on to make Daddy's Home 2. Adam McKay, Chris Henchy and Brian Burns wrote the screenplay, with McKay, Henchy and Will Ferrell producing. Ferrell plays Brad opposite Mark Wahlberg as Dusty, and Linda Cardellini plays Sara; Thomas Haden Church, Scarlett Estevez and Owen Vaccaro round out the main cast. The film was released on December 25, 2015, and runs 96 minutes.

Produced by Paramount, Red Granite Pictures and Gary Sanchez Productions, it cost about 50 million USD and took roughly 243 million USD worldwide, a strong return on its budget. On IMDb it holds 6.2/10 from around 139,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.3/10 from about 3,520 votes, while a critics' rating of 4.9/10 from 125 reviews places it lower with reviewers than with general audiences.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Initially, Will Ferrell was supposed to play the father, and the role of the stepfather was intended for Ed Helms.
  • The role played by Mark Wahlberg was originally intended for Vince Vaughn.
  • Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell starred together in "The Other Guys" (2010).
  • Billy Slater and Will Ferrell starred together in "The Campaign" (2012).
  • As stated in the trailer, this is the second film where Mark Wahlberg's character appears in a shirt. This first happened in "Date Night" (2010), starring Steve Carell.
  • John Cena made a cameo appearance in this film. In 2015, "Trainwreck" was released, where Cena's character mentions Mark Wahlberg.
  • Will Ferrell plays a character named Brad Whitaker. The main villain in the 1987 James Bond adventure, "A View to a Kill," was also named Brad Whitaker.
  • Filming took place at the prestigious Edward Hynes School in New Orleans, Louisiana. The school caters to students from preschool through eighth grade, and many students were used as extras.
  • Bobby Cannavale and Linda Cardellini both appeared in 2015 films from the Marvel Cinematic Universe – Cannavale in "Ant-Man," and Cardellini in "Avengers: Age of Ultron."
  • The scene where Will Ferrell's character throws a basketball from mid-court and hits a girl was filmed during a break in a New Orleans basketball game between the Pelicans and the Lakers. A video of the shot immediately appeared on YouTube and Vine.
  • In the skateboard scene, stunt doubles Tony Hawk and Mike McGill were used instead of the actors.
  • When Brad is getting into the Christmas spirit, his son points out that it's already mid-April (around the time the NBA playoffs begin). Towards the end of opening presents, Brad tells his son that he managed to get tickets to a playoff game for his favorite team, the Los Angeles Lakers. When the start of the game is shown, Ed Davis (Lakers, who played for the team for only one season, 2014-2015) and the leader of the New Orleans Pelicans, Anthony Davis, compete for the opening tip-off. The Lakers have never played in the playoffs against a New Orleans Pelicans team featuring Anthony Davis. And the last time the Lakers played in the playoffs was in 2013, but Kobe Bryant missed those playoffs due to an injury (Achilles tendon rupture).
  • For the scene in the garage, Mark Wahlberg had to do approximately 700 one-handed pull-ups, with assistance, of course. The scene was shot from various angles.
  • The scene in which Will Ferrell's character throws a ball into the hoop from mid-court and hits a girl was filmed during a break in a basketball game in New Orleans between the Pelicans and the Lakers.
