Comet is a romance with science-fiction touches that follows Dell, a cynical young man, and Kimberly, a sharp-witted woman, after a chance meeting. The two begin a turbulent relationship that plays out over six years, shifting between Los Angeles, New York and Paris. The story moves back and forth through time, assembling its moments out of order so that the shape of the relationship emerges gradually rather than chronologically.
Sam Esmail wrote and directed the film, his first feature as director. It was produced by Lee Clay, Scott G. Stone and Chad Hamilton through Anonymous Content and Fubar Films. Justin Long and Emmy Rossum star as Dell and Kimberly, with Kayla Servi, Eric Winter, Ben Scott and Lou Beatty Jr. in supporting roles.
Released in December 2014, the film runs 91 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.7 from roughly 20,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.6 from about 473 votes, indicating a modest but generally favourable response from viewers. The critics' rating of 5.3 from 32 reviews is lower than either audience score, suggesting reviewers were less convinced than the public. Esmail went on to direct Leave the World Behind in 2023 and Panic Carefully in 2027.
