Short description
Insidious: Chapter 3 is a horror film that moves the series back in time. It centres on Quinn Brenner, a teenager living in Chicago with her father, Sean, who is still grieving the death of his wife. Hoping to reach her mother, Quinn approaches Elise Rainier, a medium with a genuine gift she has long refused to use. When Quinn is targeted by a hostile supernatural presence, her father pleads with Elise for help, and the medium eventually agrees to reach into the world of the dead to protect the girl. Two paranormal investigators, Specs and Tucker, assist her.
The film was directed by Leigh Whannell, who also wrote the screenplay, from a story developed with James Wan, Jason Blum and Oren Peli producing. It was Whannell's first time directing a feature, ahead of Upgrade, The Invisible Man and Wolf Man. Lin Shaye returns as Elise, joined by Stefanie Scott as Quinn, Dermot Mulroney as Sean and Steve Coulter as Carl, with Whannell and Angus Sampson appearing as the investigators.
Made for about 10 million dollars, it took roughly 113 million dollars worldwide, a strong return on its budget. Ratings sit in the middle range: on IMDb it holds 6.1 from around 128,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.3 from a much smaller base of 3,766 votes. Critics were less positive, giving it 5.6 from 126 reviews.

- James Wan was unable to direct this film due to his commitment to "Furious 7" (2015). However, he appeared in a cameo role as one of the judges during Quinn Brenner's audition.
- The film's trailer was released in March 2015 and featured a song by Sharon Van Etten – "Afraid of Nothing." The song was added to the film without acquiring the rights to it. After a fan informed Van Etten about this on Twitter, she forced the filmmakers to pay for the unauthorized use of her work.
- Alice's dog is named Warren. This is a reference to Ed and Lorraine Warren, characters from "The Conjuring" (2013).
- Lee Whannell put young Stephanie Scott through all the circles of hell in particularly intense scenes. The preparation for the scenes where Quinn Brenner was subjected to supernatural forces was especially effective. Whannell locked the actress in a dark storage room and made her listen to ominous music in complete darkness for about half an hour. To discourage anyone from freeing her from this "captivity," a guard stood outside. Periodically, Lee would burst into the storage room to check if the actress had lowered the volume on her headphones.
