- James Wan was unable to direct this film due to his commitment to "Furious 7" (2015). However, he appeared in a cameo role as one of the judges during Quinn Brenner's audition.
- The film's trailer was released in March 2015 and featured a song by Sharon Van Etten – "Afraid of Nothing." The song was added to the film without acquiring the rights to it. After a fan informed Van Etten about this on Twitter, she forced the filmmakers to pay for the unauthorized use of her work.
- Alice's dog is named Warren. This is a reference to Ed and Lorraine Warren, characters from "The Conjuring" (2013).
- Lee Whannell put young Stephanie Scott through all the circles of hell in particularly intense scenes. The preparation for the scenes where Quinn Brenner was subjected to supernatural forces was especially effective. Whannell locked the actress in a dark storage room and made her listen to ominous music in complete darkness for about half an hour. To discourage anyone from freeing her from this "captivity," a guard stood outside. Periodically, Lee would burst into the storage room to check if the actress had lowered the volume on her headphones.
