Short description
Literature professor Jim Bennett leads a secret life as a high-stakes gambler. Always a risk-taker, Bennett bets it all when he borrows from a gangster and offers his own life as collateral. Staying one step ahead, he pits his creditor against the operator of an illicit gambling ring while garnering the attention of Frank, a paternalistic loan shark. As his relationship with a student deepens, Bennett must risk everything for a second chance.

- Mark Wahlberg lost 25 kilograms for the filming of the movie.
- Mark Wahlberg really wanted to play a literature professor. In preparation for the role, he spent a lot of time attending literature classes at various universities in California, observing professors and noting their characteristic traits and mannerisms.
- Mark Wahlberg admitted that the most difficult scene to film was the one at the end of the movie, when his character is forced to run. He had lost so much weight that he simply didn't have the strength to run.
