License to Wed is a 2007 comedy about Ben Murphy and Sadie Jones, a recently engaged couple eager to marry. Sadie wants the ceremony at St. Augustine, the Chicago church where her parents wed, but its pastor, Reverend Frank, will not bless the union unless they complete his marriage preparation course. The program includes unusual classes, odd homework and intrusions into their private life, all designed to test whether the relationship can survive.
Ken Kwapis directed, working from a screenplay by Kim Barker, Tim Rasmussen and Vince Di Meglio. The film followed The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and Sexual Life in Kwapis's filmography and preceded He's Just Not That Into You. Mandy Moore and John Krasinski play Sadie and Ben, with Robin Williams as Reverend Frank; Eric Christian Olsen, Christine Taylor and Josh Flitter appear in supporting roles. It was made for about 35 million US dollars and took roughly 69 million worldwide, a modest return on its production cost.
Audience response was mixed. On IMDb it holds 5.2 out of 10 from over 40,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.7 out of 10 from a much smaller pool of voters. The two totals point to the same conclusion: viewers generally found the film an ordinary studio comedy rather than a standout of its year. It runs 91 minutes.
