Short description
Two siblings, Becca and Tyler, are sent to stay for a week with grandparents they have never met at a remote farm in Pennsylvania. Their mother, who left home years earlier after a serious falling out with her parents, takes the opportunity to go on a cruise with her boyfriend while the children make the trip by train. The grandparents initially seem warm and welcoming, but they impose an odd rule: the children must not leave their room after 9:30 in the evening. Becca, an aspiring filmmaker, documents the visit with her camera, and the footage gradually reveals that something is wrong with the elderly couple.
M. Night Shyamalan directed and wrote the film, which he also produced with Jason Blum. It is the ninth of the fifteen features he has directed, following After Earth and preceding Split. The cast includes Olivia DeJonge as Becca, Ed Oxenbould as Tyler, Deanna Dunagan and Peter McRobbie as the grandparents, and Kathryn Hahn as the children's mother. It was made for a budget of about 5 million dollars and took roughly 98 million dollars worldwide.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.3 from around 173,000 votes, and on TMDB it also stands at 6.3, from about 5,300 votes. A critics' rating of 5.9 from 228 reviews places it slightly below the audience scores, though the three sets of figures sit within a similar range, suggesting a modestly received horror film rather than a widely praised one.
What's left behind the scenes
- At the beginning of the film, Becca and Tyler are looking at photographs on the wall in their grandparents' house. One of the pictures features the possessed doll Annabelle from James Wan's 2013 film "The Conjuring".
- This is the first horror film directed by M. Night Shyamalan for which James Newton Howard, a prominent composer who has written music for many popular films, did not compose the score. The director decided to forgo musical accompaniment due to the low budget and the film's genre – found footage (a genre in which the entire film or a substantial part of it is presented to the viewer as material from found recordings on film or video cameras, often remaining after the missing or deceased characters of the film).
- The director himself does not play any cameo roles in the film "The Visit".
- Aspiring rapper Tyler talks about his music and mentions Tyler, the Creator. This is the pseudonym of an American rapper whose compositions can be described as "horror-themed rap".
- The working title of the film was "Night Confusion".
- To finance the film “The Visit,” M. Night Shyamalan used money earned from the release of “After Earth” (2013), which was produced by Will Smith. As the director himself explained, he wanted to “regain control over the creative process” after his previous films were either left unedited or had the editing taken away from him during production.
- In a rap song about the events depicted in “The Visit,” Tyler claims he survived like Mel Gibson in one of his action films. In the film, Tyler kills his grandfather by hitting his head against a refrigerator door. Gibson in “Lethal Weapon 2” (1989) kills the villain in the same way, only using a car door instead of a refrigerator door.
- The end credits roll against the backdrop of Tyler’s rap song, where he describes what happened to him and his sister and mentions that he survived like Mel Gibson at the end of “Lethal Weapon 2” (1989). Gibson starred in M. Night Shyamalan’s “Signs,” which was released in 2002.
