Bright Star

Bright Star is a romantic drama set in London in 1818, centred on the relationship between the poet John Keats and his neighbour Fanny Brawne. The two begin on uneasy terms: Fanny is fashionable and outspoken, with little interest in poetry, while Keats is reserved and preoccupied with his writing. Their connection grows after Fanny sees how he cares for his ill brother, and Keats agrees to teach her about poetry. Feelings develop on both sides, but Keats has no money and poor health, and the people around them do not approve of the match. Fanny's mother objects to a penniless suitor, and Keats's friend and patron Mr. Brown regards her as a distraction from the poet's work.

Jane Campion directed and wrote the screenplay, with Jan Chapman and Caroline Hewitt producing. It was Campion's eighth feature, arriving between To Each His Own Cinema and The Power of the Dog. Abbie Cornish plays Fanny Brawne and Ben Whishaw plays John Keats, with Paul Schneider as Mr. Brown, Kerry Fox as Mrs. Brawne, Edie Martin as Toots and Thomas Brodie-Sangster as Samuel. The film runs 119 minutes.
