Don't Breathe
Short description
Three young burglars in Detroit plan what they expect to be an easy score: emptying the house of a solitary blind man rumoured to be keeping a large sum of money inside. Alex, whose father works in security, uses what he has learned to get past alarm systems, while Rocky wants the proceeds to get herself and her little sister away from a violent home, and Money comes along for the thrill. Once they are inside, the man they took for helpless turns out to be neither helpless nor willing to let them leave, and the night becomes a fight to get out of the house alive.
Fede Álvarez directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Rodo Sayagues, with Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert among the producers. It was Álvarez's second feature, following his 2013 Evil Dead and preceding The Girl in the Spider's Web and Alien: Romulus. Stephen Lang plays the blind man, with Jane Levy, Dylan Minnette and Daniel Zovatto as the intruders.
Made for about 10 million dollars, the film took roughly 159 million worldwide, a return that made it a considerable success for its budget. On IMDb it holds 7 out of 10 from 158 votes, and on TMDB 7 out of 10 from more than 8,000 votes. A critics' rating of 7.3 out of 10 from 245 reviews puts it slightly above the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Stephen Lang wore contact lenses during filming, but they severely limited his vision, especially in poor lighting. Other actors also wore contact lenses for scenes with similar lighting, resulting in impaired vision that appeared as dilated pupils.
- Exterior shots of the house were filmed in Detroit. Interior shots were filmed in the Hungarian town of Pomáz, near Budapest.
- The safe combination is 2978. This is the birthday of director Federico Álvarez – February 9, 1978.
- The street where the blind man lives is called Buena Vista, which translates from Spanish as "beautiful view".
- Throughout the film, the character played by Steven Lang speaks only 13 lines, and mostly towards the end.
- Initially, the ending was planned to be more bleak. Rocky (Jane Levy) was not supposed to escape from the house. The blind man (Steven Lang) locked her in the basement, and the police who were called did not notice the basement door. However, it was ultimately decided to let Rocky and Norman survive.
- At the end of the film, the heroine, while fleeing from the blind man, loses her bag near the car. In the next shot, the bag disappears next to the car, and then reappears.
