The Boy
Short description
A young American woman named Greta travels to a remote English village to work as a nanny for an elderly couple. Upon arriving at their estate, she discovers that her charge is not a real child, but a life-sized doll that the parents treat as a living son. Greta is required to follow a set of rigid rules while caring for the figure. When she begins to ignore these instructions, unsettling events occur, leading her to suspect that the doll may actually be alive.
Directed by William Brent Bell, this film followed his previous works Stay Alive, The Devil Inside, and Wer. The movie stars Lauren Cohan as Greta and Rupert Evans as Malcolm, with Jim Norton and Diana Hardcastle playing the parents. Produced by Lakeshore Entertainment, Vertigo Entertainment, and STX Films, the project had a budget of 10 million USD and earned 74 million USD at the worldwide box office.
The film has a rating of 6/10 on IMDb based on 108,000 votes and a matching 6/10 on TMDB from 4,019 votes. These audience scores are higher than the rating provided by film critics, which stands at 4.6/10 from 64 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film was originally titled "In Darkness," and Jane Levy was supposed to play the main role.
- Early script drafts indicated that Brahms's parents hired Greta because he needed a playmate (there are some hints of this in the final version of the film). There are also hints that Brahms initially intended to abduct and rape her. For example, in early versions of the scene where Greta comes out of the shower and finds her clothes missing, she walked around the house naked for several minutes (while Brahms watched) before wrapping herself in a blanket and going to the attic, where she was accidentally locked in. The scene at the end of the film where Brahms asks Greta to kiss him goodnight was also originally different. Brahms would grab the girl and start kissing and fondling her until she hit him with a screwdriver. Furthermore, the script ended with a scene of Brahms's death at her hands, whereas the film shows Brahms alive after Greta and Malcolm leave.
- During filming, the actors used a doll for playful teasing. Once, one of the actors placed the doll opposite the bathroom door of another actor in the trailer they shared. When he came out of the bathroom, he was startled and angrily threw the doll out of the trailer. The broken doll had to be replaced.
