Short description
To Each His Own Cinema is a collection of short films created to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Cannes Film Festival. A group of international filmmakers contributed brief segments, each lasting a few minutes, to explore the nature of cinema and the experience of the movie theater in the modern world.
Directed by Aki Kaurismäki, the film is a comedy-drama co-produced by StudioCanal, ARTE, Office Kitano, and Elzévir Films. It features contributions from numerous prominent directors, including Lars von Trier, Alejandro González Iñárritu, David Cronenberg, Zhang Yimou, Joel and Ethan Coen, Wim Wenders, Takeshi Kitano, Roman Polanski, Gus Van Sant, David Lynch, Walter Salles, Theo Angelopoulos, Jane Campion, Michael Cimino, Wong Kar-wai, Ken Loach, Claude Lelouch, Bille August, Youssef Chahine, Amos Gitai, Chen Kaige, Olivier Assayas, Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne, Atom Egoyan, Raymond Depardon, Andrei Konchalovsky, Hou Hsiao-hsien, Nanni Moretti, Tsai Ming-liang, Manoel de Oliveira, Abbas Kiarostami, Raúl Ruiz, and Elia Suleiman. What's left behind the scenes
- Brothers Joel and Ethan Coen, like David Lynch, submitted their work past the deadline, and therefore were not included in the final cut of the film (the DVD was being prepared for the beginning of the Cannes Film Festival and was already being distributed and sold there on the premiere day). However, David Lynch's film and the work of the Coen brothers were shown as separate clips during the premiere screenings. Later, Lynch's short film was released in a French 2-disc collector's edition along with a re-edited work by Hou Hsiao-hsien and expanded versions by Iñárritu, Cimino, and Suleiman. Incidentally, the Coens were inexplicably absent from this edition.
